Confidence Built by Accreditation

Every day, consumers and businesses in Saint Lucia rely on products, services, measurements, and testing results without giving much thought to the systems that ensure their reliability. Behind that confidence stands the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS), helping to safeguard quality, safety, and fairness across the economy. Whether you are purchasing food, filling your vehicle’s fuel tank, receiving a laboratory test result, or relying on a measuring instrument in business, trust plays a critical role. Consumers, businesses, and regulatory authorities depend on accurate measurements, reliable testing, and consistent quality standards every day.

At the SLBS, accreditation serves as an independent assurance that our work meets internationally recognized standards of quality, competence, and impartiality.

What is Accreditation?

As one of the key pillars of Saint Lucia’s National Quality Infrastructure, accreditation is the formal, independent recognition that an organization is competent to carry out specific conformity assessment activities according to established international standards.

Simply put, accreditation provides confidence that testing laboratories, inspection bodies, certification bodies, and other conformity assessment organizations are capable of delivering accurate, reliable, and trustworthy results.

It provides answers to a fundamental question: Can this organization be trusted to do what it says it can do?

Accreditation at the SLBS

The SLBS understands the value of attaining accreditation. The SLBS Compliance Department has been awarded accreditation from 2023 by the JANAAC Global Accreditation to the ISO/IEC 17020 standard  which specifies the requirements for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection. The SLBS must consistently meet certain requirements in order to maintain this accreditation. Accreditation to this standard confirms that the Compliance Department possesses technical expertise, qualified personnel, appropriate equipment, and effective management systems required to perform our inspection activities.

Our Metrology Department recently completed its assessment by JANAAC Global Accreditation for accreditation to the ISO/IEC17025 standard which specifies the general requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories at the new National Agricultural Diagnostic Facility (NADF) location. SLBS achieved accreditation to ISO 17025 in 2020 when the Metrology Department was located at Bisee, Castries.

Our Certification Department is currently working towards accreditation to the ISO/IEC 17065 standard which specifies the requirements for bodies certifying products, processes and services.

SLBS first achieved certification 2017 to the international quality management system standard ISO 9001which it continues to maintain through successive three-year recertification cycles. This certification demonstrates the organization’s commitment to delivering quality services through consistent processes, customer focus, and continual improvement.

Why Does Accreditation Matter to Saint Lucia?

As Saint Lucia continues to strengthen its participation in regional and international markets, accreditation plays an increasingly important role in supporting trade and economic growth.

Accredited services help to:

  • Facilitate access to regional and international markets
  • Reduce technical barriers to trade
  • Enhance the credibility of products and services
  • Strengthen consumer confidence
  • Support innovation and competitiveness
  • Promote sustainable economic development

Ultimately, accreditation helps create a culture of quality and trust. It provides assurance that products, services, and measurements meet accepted standards, benefiting businesses, consumers, and the wider economy alike.

This year as we observe World Accreditation Day under the theme, “Innovation, Trust and Sustainability: The Power of Accreditation.” the SLBS reaffirms its commitment to maintaining internationally recognized standards and strengthening the quality infrastructure that supports national development in Saint Lucia. As such the management and staff of the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards wishes you all a happy World Accreditation Day.
