World Metrology Day 2025

Metrology is the science of measurement, and the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS) joins the rest of the world in observing World Metrology Day on May 20th. The theme for World Metrology Day 2025 is “Measurements for all times, for all people;” chosen to highlight the importance of measurements in shaping our past, present and future. This theme has added significance in 2025, which marks the 150th Anniversary of the Metre Convention.

As a tribute to this milestone, the celebration of World Metrology Day 2025 will be at the core of events to commemorate a century and a half of international collaboration in metrology. From ensuring fair trade and advancing scientific discovery to addressing global challenges like climate change and public health, measurements have been fundamental for progress and innovation.

Saint Lucia, represented by the SLBS, has actively participated in local, regional and international initiatives in metrology and has achieved its own significant milestones in metrology namely:

  • Enactment of a modern Metrology Act in the year 2000 which repealed the archaic 1911 Weights and Measures Ordinance. Saint Lucia’s Metrology Act was used as the template for other Metrology Acts in the CARICOM region
  • Saint Lucia, in 2015, became the first Caribbean country and smallest country in the world to be awarded the prestigious OIML Award for Excellent Achievements in Legal Metrology in Developing Countries. The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) is the world’s premier intergovernmental treaty organization for legal metrology
  • The Metrology Laboratory of the SLBS, in 2020, was the first calibration laboratory in the English-speaking OECS countries to be awarded ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation which later paved the way for Jamaica’s National Agency for Accreditation (JANAAC) to receive international recognition for accreditation of calibration laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025 requirements
  • Saint Lucia was the first OECS country to become a Corresponding Member of the OIML in 2022
  • Saint Lucia, in 2022, was the first OECS country to host the SIM Week and Annual General Assembly (AGA) of the Inter-American Metrology System (SIM).
  • Successful participation in SIM supplementary inter-laboratory comparisons with good peer-reviewed results which have demonstrated Saint Lucia’s technical competence in mass and volume calibrations.

In commemoration of World Metrology Day  the public and interested persons are invited to follow the May 20th livestream, on the SLBS website (www.slbs.org), UNESCO website (https://webcast.unesco.org/events/2025-05-WMD/) or YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEt30j80CN4 ) for the joint BIPM–UNESCO World Metrology Day Symposium, marking the 150th anniversary of the Metre Convention from UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.

The SLBS takes this opportunity to remind you that “To measure is to know and that first we measure then we take measures.” For further information call Mr. Anselm Gittens (Head of Metrology) at +1 (758) 468-8686.
